Backbarrow is the culmination of a 25 year project. This derelict former industrial site was of significant historic interest, containing a blast furnace and historic ironworks, which carried a Scheduled Ancient Monument Status.

Mason Gillibrand were commissioned to obtain Planning Consent and Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent to develop the former ironworks into an economically sustainable development, and safe guard the historic fabric.

A successful permission was granted for a mixed use development consisting of:

i) A series of new build projects incorporating workshops, offices and 22 new build housing units which are occupied as Live Work Units.

ii) The restoration and conserving of the blast furnace and the associated restoration and conversion of 7 historic ironworks buildings, in to private dwellings.

After careful negotiations with Historic England and the LDNP, we are currently completing the implementation of the final phase of this development – the conversion of the historic ironworks buildings it to bespoke dwellings, which balance the need to respect the historic fabric of these schedule ancient monument buildings, whilst creating exciting inspiring contemporary homes.
